Recently Nepal and China jointly announced new revised height of Mount Everest which is the highest peak in the world . The new height of Mount Everest is 8,848.86 metre that show 86 cm more height as compare to previous one which is 8,848 meter measured in 1954 .




Why Nepal decided to measure Mount Everest 

The Nepal government decided to measure the exact height of  Mount Everest because of the debate that there might have been a change in it due to various reasons, including the devastating earthquake of 2015. So Nepal recalculate the height which is now 8,848.86 meters ,which is officially announced by country's Foreign Ministry Pradeep Gyawali  in Kathmandu .




Some facts of Mount Everest 

  • Mount Everest  is  known as Sagarmatha in Nepal and is the highest Mountain peak in the world .

  • In Tibetan mount Everest is known as Qomolangmai.

  • Mount Everest gets its English name from sir George Everest , a colonial era Geographer , who work as a Surveyor General of India  in the mid - 19 th century. 

  • It is 200.86 m above to the world's second- highest mountain, K2 which is 8, 611 meter tall and located in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir. 

  • Location - Solukhumbu District , province No . 1 in Nepal -Tibet Autonomous Region,  China border

  • Country wise it is found in Nepal and China 

  • There is very little native flora and fauna on Everest . A moss grows at 6,480 meters . It may be highest altitude plant species  . 

  • Euophrys omnisuperster , a minute black jumping spider live at elevation  of up to 6,700 m making it highest known permanent resident on Earth .



Who measure previous height of Mount Everest?

India, American or European surveyors measure the previous height of Mount Everest in 1954 measurement done by Survey of India , which comes under Department of Science and Technology.

 Survey of India is the National  Survey and Mapping Organisation come under the Department of Science and Technology. It is oldest Department of the Government of India which is established in 1767 . Its headquarters is present in Dehradun , Uttarakhand .
